GayMatchmaker delivers adequate dating services to gay Australian men, but if you live outside of Australia and don’t plan on visiting the country any time soon, you are very unlikely to discover your future partner. Plus, Gay Matchmaker is not ideal for longterm dating and mostly helps find hookup opportunities.
Gay Matchmaker is a gay dating site that was launched in 2004 and is exclusive to the Australian audience. At that time, there were little to no Australian gay dating services, but now that there are plenty of international gay dating sites, GayMatchmaker seems to have turned into a niche dating service for its most loyal fans. Find out everything you need to know about it with our Gay Matchmaker review!
Signing Up at GayMatchmaker
The home page of Gay Matchmaker is rather informative and lets you learn a lot about the service before making the decision to sign up. There is a presentation of some of the website’s features and stats, where you can find out that GayMatchmaker currently has over 300,000 members in Australia. You can even take a look at some of the member profiles on the site, but you cannot contact them or perform other actions without creating an account.
The important thing to know here is that registration on Gay Matchmaker is only available to members that are currently in Australia. You have an option of signing up with your Facebook account, but you can also create a GayMatchmaker account the old-fashioned way by signing up with your email.
The registration form at gaymatchmaket.com.au is relatively detailed: in addition to the usual fields like birthdate and username, you should also specify your dating goals and preferences. You won’t need to confirm your registration via email, but once your account is created, you will need to
Design and Usability
Gay Matchmaker is a relatively old dating site, but it does not look obsolete and is actually rather convenient to use. There is a top menu, where you can see your latest notifications, winks, and messages, as well as access, view, and edit your profile or upgrade your account.
Below, you will find the main website menu with options such as Search, Messenger, Chat, Community, Travel, and Stories. These options provide lots of activities for GayMatchmaker users, but some of them are only available to paying members.
On the left, you will find another menu, where you can once again update your profile, see your latest messages, winks, and access the help centre. Overall, we found the left menu to be nearly identical to the top menu, and we don’t really see a point in creating an extra menu with similar features that makes the user interface more crowded.
User Account Features
The profiles on Gay Matchmaker are very detailed and there are several ways to discover them: through search, through pop-ups on the site, or from the matching system that selects members based on your location. The member profiles on GayMatchmaker include information about the member’s location, age, sexual preferences, appearance, and dating goals.
There are only two ways you can contact the GayMatchmaker members: you can send a message or wink at them to get yourself noticed without writing a message. You can also add the profile to your favorites if you want to come back to it later, report the member to the customer support if you consider it to be suspicious, or validate the member if you have met them in real life and have concluded they are a genuine person.
At GayMatchmaker, you can create your profile, browse the members, and access some other features for free, but as a free user, you will sooner or later face some limitations. For example, free users cannot send messages to other members, enter chat rooms, or access priority customer support. To do all that, you need to pay for a membership.
Unlike other gay dating sites that have one or two membership plans, Gay Matchmaker has three, and it’s easy to get lost in the variety of features they offer and the differences between them. Plus, the membership at GayMatchmaker is rather expensive, but you can bring down the cost of each month by paying for more months at once. You can also add a Postage Paid option for $10 a month to allow free users to communicate with you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is GayMatchmaker a scam?
No, Gay Matchmaker is not a scam. The site has been around for over 15 years and has plenty of members who met through it and have used it successfully for years. There are, however, occasional fake profile, but their quantity is smaller than on similar gay dating sites.
Is GayMatchmaker safe?
We took a very detailed look at the features of Gay Matchmaker and other GayMatchmaker reviews online, and we concluded that gaymatchmaker.com.au is generally a safe gay dating site. There is some information on how to stay safe during your online dating experience in the Help section of the site and there is an option to report suspicious profiles and activity to the site administrators.
However, we did not like the fact that you can only contact customer support via a help form on the site — it can take them more than 24 hours to respond to your request, and chat or phone support would have been quicker.
Does GayMatchmaker have a mobile app?
No, we were extremely surprised to find that in 2020, Gay Matchmaker does not have a mobile app available for either platform. You can open gaymatchmaker.com.au in your mobile browser, but with limited functionality and no notifications, you will not get the same online dating experience that you would with an app.
